Qualcomm Snapdragon is a telecommunications product made by the Qualcomm company. The company was founded by seven people namely Dr. Irwin M. Jacobs, Dr. Andrew Viterbi, Harvey White, Franklin Antonio, Andrew Cohen, Klein Gilhousen, and Adelia Coffman. At that time, Qualcomm only had dozens of employees, with one of its initial focuses being satellite-based communication technology and CDMA. Approximately at the age of 6 years, Qualcomm has tested the CDMA network in their hometown, namely in San Diego. They also began selling their shares to the public and employed nearly 800 workers.
The development of the need for CDMA-based telecommunications, especially in their home country, the US, made Qualcomm grow rapidly in the period 1991 – 1998. Their number of employees increased by more than 14 times during that period, and collaborated with several other large companies to develop telecommunications CDMA-based was established. Their great achievements were recorded in the period 1998 – 1999, including the world’s first trial for data communication which was eventually known as EV-DO.
In 1999 and 2000, Qualcomm released several of their divisions, including the wireless infrastructure division and the CDMA handset division, they began to focus on telecommunication chips based on CDMA2000 and WCDMA. Their telecommunications chip business continues to grow, and by 2005 they had operations in 26 countries.
In the following period, Qualcomm began to expand their chip business and developed the first Snapdragon chip, integrating several communication technologies with the Scorpion processor they developed. In 2009, several well-known companies began to look at the Snapdragon SoC to use it as a motor for their smartphone products. This allowed Qualcomm’s business to grow rapidly again, and they employed approximately 17,500 employees in 2010, and expanded their operations in 35 countries.
The smartphone era in the period after 2010 made Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip business continue to grow rapidly, where the business that was originally seen as a “side” has turned into one of the company’s strengths. They are getting serious about developing the Snapdragon SoC, while still paying great attention to communication technology. This is what ultimately became one of the main strengths of Qualcomm, even today, as a complete technology provider for smartphones.
Entering the 4G LTE era, Qualcomm has become a driving factor for the data communication technology, both in terms of infrastructure and devices. Qualcomm became the first company to demo LTE Advanced, and offered the Snapdragon 800 SoC which became the motor of the world’s first LTE Advanced smartphone. Until now, Qualcomm continues to develop their SoC, so that it can not only offer fast CPU (and GPU) and good communication capabilities, but also other things that are increasingly needed in today’s era, including in terms of cameras, audio, to AI. They also helped develop a more intensive use of SoC, including for XR (AR & VR), which is increasingly in demand today.
